Description:
The earliest settlers on Sutton's Island were Joseph Lancaster of Sullivan and Isaac Richardson, son of James Richardson of Mount Desert. William and Joseph Moore were early settlers, also. William later moved to Bear Island and was the first keeper of the Bear Island light. Sutton, from whom the island now takes its name, was, perhaps, a squatter. It is thought that he removed to the Maritime Provinces. - “Mount Desert, A History” by George E. Street, Edited by Samuel A. Eliot, Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1905. [show more]
