1987 College of the Atlantic Commencement Materials

These are materials from the fifteenth commencement ceremony at the College of the Atlantic, held on May 30, 1987. The first image is from the commencement program and has a black and white stylized illustration depicting plants. The second image is from the commencement invitation, and has a teal and white abstract design.

The third image is a graduation pledge of environmental and social responsibility, originally from Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. The text of the pledge reads:

"I, [name], pledge to thoroughly investigate and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job opportunity I consider."

The accompanying text describing the pledge says:

"This Pledge is one of a burgeoning number of similar oaths and pledges being created by scientists, mathematicians, physicians, and others to foster greater awareness of the impact of work and study choices on global problems. Such public declarations of personal intent can reach far beyond the individual in their impact. Said one HSU Pledge signer, "When I get my first teaching job ... I'll have it on the wall of my classroom." The Graduation Pledge Alliance is promoting the Pledge to other universities."
